BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 8/20/17
PAUL OLIVER INTERVIEW

This week on BBS – Sad News, the leading light of Blues research over the past 50 years, Paul Oliver, has died at the age of 90. He was renown for his Blues books (nine in all) including his landmark volumes Blues Fell This Morning (1960) and The Story Of The Blues (1969). He was also revered for his part in encouraging others to undertake their own Blues research projects. Oliver started listening to American music in 1939, starting with Boogie Woogie and graduating to Blues during the years of WWII. He wrote a steady stream of articles in various music magazines starting in 1951, continuously promoting the music and it’s makers. He made a landmark tour of the U.S. in 1960, seeking out Blues players in several regions of the country, recording their music and interviewing the players on their lives and careers. I interviewed Paul Oliver in April 2006. This extended interview is included in my book Pioneers Of The Blues Revival (2014). To mark the occasion of Paul’s passing we’ll rebroadcast this interview with music mixed in.

It happens during Hours #2 & 3.

BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 8/13/17
 COUNTING DOWN THE YEARS WITH

DINAH WASHINGTON

This week on BBS we’ve got two big features. We’ll be presenting Blues from the year 1928, counting our way through the calendar month-by-month. We’ll find artists and records for each specific month,  presenting a cross-section of the Blues recorded during this year. It all happens during Hour #3. And during Hours #1 & 2 we’ll count down the years with Dinah Washington. Her recording career spanned the years 1943 to her death in 1963 we’ll find a single recorded side from each year she was in the studio – starting in 1943. They called her The Queen and rightfully so - hear why during this feature. You’ll want to record this for your summer trip. BTW Queenie had a reputation for being hard on musicians, difficult to work for and was known to fire band members with the blink of an eye. Musicians in Chicago got their revenge by playing a brand of Poker known as Dinah Washington – the black queens were poison and if you drew one you were out of the hand! Don’t miss it! Dinah Down Thru The Years – Only on BBS!
